The State Capture Commission, which was headed Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, then deputy chief justice, unearthed voluminous data on corrupt and unethical dealings in the country. The cost of the looting of state-owned enterprises and government departments is estimated to be about R1,5 trillion. These losses add up to schools, hospitals, roads, and other critical services and infrastructure that communities across the country have been deprived of. State capture also exacerbated the ongoing energy crisis, having plunged Eskom into a financial hole and currently Eskom poses the greatest risk to South Africa’s economy. President Cyril Ramaphosa is due to present his response to the Zondo Commission recommendations by the end of October.
